Jan Vermeer Biography: Jan Vermeer, one of the giants of the art world, lived his entire life in the city of Delft. He earned his living not as an artist but rather as an art dealer. He is mostly known for his exquisite handling of flesh tones and his dramatic side lighting in his mostly genre paintings. It is not known exactly how many paintings Vermeer did in his lifetime, but only 35 have survived. His life and his work were relatively obscure until the late 19th century.
