Diego Velazquez Biography: Diego Velazquez, one of the giants of the art world, was born into a family of Portuguese noble descent. He would marry his art teachers daughter. In 1629 he visited Italy to copy the works of the Italian masters, twenty years later he would return a successful artist himself to purchase some of those very same paintings. Outside of those two trips Velazquez spent most of his life in Madrid as court painter. Although he also painted landscapes and genre pictures, he is first and foremost known for his portraits especially of children often referred to as "Infantas."
Died: 1661
