Anthony Van Dyck Biography: He was the son of a successful merchant. His paternal grandfather had also been an artist. He formed
a close bond with is mentor Peter Paul Rubens and by 17 he had risen to the level of Ruben's chief assistant. At the age of
21 Van Dyck left the studio of his master to take a post at the court of King James VI & I. After only a few months he
left his post and traveled to Italy. When he returned to Antwerp he opened a large studio where he continued his success
as an artist. In 1632 he once again became the English court painter, but this time to Charles I.
