Jacob Van Ruysdael Biography: In his early paintings he painted mostly the dunes surrounding his native Haarlem. After a visit to a friend in the wooded eastern region of Holland his landscape paintings not only included trees but often seemed to make them along with waterfalls and windmills the subject of his artwork. He was a meticulous draftsman. In the 1660s he settled in Amsterdam where he added cityscapes and winter scenes to his artistic repertoire.
Died: 1682
