U2 biography: The group formed in response to a notice posted on a Dublin high school bulletin board by Larry Mullen Jr. Guitar/vocalist Bono, Paul Hewson, the Edge, guitarist/ keyboardist/vocalist David Evans, bassist Adam Clayton, and Dick Evans responded to the
message forming a band called the Feedback which they changed to the Hype the following year. They won a contest, sponsored by Guiness, in 1978 their senior year. In 1979 they released their first EP U2:3 which was available only in Ireland where it topped the charts.
The group would release one more chart topper "Another Day" before signing a recording contract with Island Records. The groups debut album Boy had a unique edgy post-punk sound which caused them to stand out from their peers. The effort made the charts in America and
their followup October proved to be their English breaktrhough. Their 1983 release War, with its powerful political message, debuted on the UK charts at number 1 and rose all the way to number 12 in America. Their live recording Under A Blood Red Sky recorded at
Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheater debuted at number 2 in the UK. The Unforgettable Fire released in the fall of '84 duplicated the chart efforts of War in both the UK and the US. The 1987 release of The Joshua Tree elevated the group to international superstardom, becoming
the groups first number 1 American album and earned the group accolades from the mass media. Their documentary Rattle & Hum along with its accompanying sound track received the groups worst reviews.
