In 1962 their father took the brothers to Los Angeles to audition for the Lawrence Welk Show, but Welk refused to see the group. Not wanting to make the trip a total waste of time he took the kids to Disneyland where they got to sing with the regular barbershop quartet employed at the park. They were signed to a contract and appeared there nightly. Good fortune was beginning to smile on the brothers for on one of those nights the father of a rising TV star, Andy Williams father visited the park. They made their debut on the Andy Williams Show just before Christmas. A year later younger brother Donny joined the group on the show. After the show folded in 1967 they joined the Jerry Lewis Show until 1970. With the rise of bubble gum groups like the Jackson 5 and the Partridge family, at that time, the Osmonds became a hot item signing with MGM Records. The Label's staff songwriter George Jackson had penned what they felt was a sure fire hit "One Bad Apple," it was staying on top of the charts for 5 weeks. a slew of hits followed through 1972; "Double Lovin'," the Top Five hits "Yo-Yo" and "Down by the Lazy River," "Hold Her Tight," and "Crazy Horses." In 1971 Donny launched his solo career with "Go Away Little Girl." In 1973, younger sister Marie started appearing with the group, helping her launch her solo singing career. She had a big hit with "Paper Roses." Changing tastes began to curb their popularity. In 1974 they had their last top ten single "Love Me for a Reason." From 1976 to 1978 Donny and Marie teamed up to do a national variety TV show. |
