Comments: She is the daughter of an African father and an English mother. She was raised on the north end of London. She studied fashion design at St. Martin's School of Art in London while modeling on the side. She started her singing career in 1980 with a group called Arriva. It was with a member of this group, Ray St. John, that she co-wrote "Smooth Operator" her first American hit. She joined the 8 piece band Pride as a background singer. It was from this band that Sade's group was formed. She along with guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman and bassist Paul Denman split off from the group and added keyboardist Andrew Hale. The new group signed a recording contract with Epic Records U.K. Her debut album which included hit singles "Smooth Operator" and "Hang on to Your Love" went platinum after it was re-released by CBS' Portrait Label. Her second album Promises contained the hit singles "Never As Good As the First Time" and "The Sweetest Taboo," as well as album tracks "Is It a Crime" and "Tar Baby" which garnered much air time. 1988's Stronger Than Pride included "Paradise," "Nothing Can Come Between Us," and "Keep Looking." After a 4 year hiatus from the charts Sade scored big with Love Deluxe in 1992 which included "No Ordinary Love," "Feel No Pain," and "Pearls." Lovers Rock released in the fall of 2000 was her most mainstream effort and the single "By Your Side" became an adult contemporary hit.
