Born: January 24, 1915 City and Country of Origin: Aberdeen, Washington Painting School: Abstract Expressionist Art Training: Exhibitions: Raymond Duncan Gallery in Paris (1939); Peggy Guggenheim "Art of This Century" gallery in New York City; MoMA Awards: Major Works: "Mexican night, 1979," "Je T'aime, No. III W Loaf of Bread" Robert Motherwell Biography: He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Stanford University and began his graduate studies at Harvard. In 1938 he spent a year traveling in Europe during which time he began painting in earnest. By 1941 he abandoned his studies and moved to New York's Greenwich Village to paint full time. Here he met William Baziotes and several of the other abstract expressionists. He did his first collage at Jackson Pollock's studio.
