Born: November 4, 1969 City and Country of Origin: Manhattan, New York Music Training: Awards: 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, No Way Out; Grammy Award Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, "I'll Be Missing You" Top Recordings: "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," "I'll Be Missing You," "Bad Boy for Life" Comments: He was born in Harlem, but spent a lot of time in Mount Vernon, NY just across the city line from the Bronx. He attended Mt. St. Michaels High School and was accepted to Howard University in Washington, D.C. While attending classes he convinced his childhood friend Heavy D to sign him as an intern for Uptown Records. Several months later he was an A&R executive with his sights set on being vice president. He was executive producer on Father MC's 1990 hit album Father's Day. After hits by Mary J. Blige (What's the 411?) and Heavy D & the Boyz he was terminated. He set up Bad Boy Entertainment, headquartered in his apartment, while earning his way as a remixer. After a year he managed to sign 2 successful recording artists Craig Mack and the Notorious B.I.G. A 1994 remix of his "Flava in Ya Ear" hit the charts for Mack and became Bad Boy's first platinum recording and Notorious B.I.G.'s "Ready to Die" went double platinum. In 1995 Combs added 2 more artists Faith Evans and Total. He also produced works outside of his label for artists like Aretha Franklin, Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey. Somehow Combs and B.I.G. became embroiled in a feud with Death Row Records' head Suge Knight and star Tupac Shakur. Shakur accused Combs of involvement in his 1994 attempted shooting and threatened him. However, in 1996 Shakur was gunned down by an unknown assailant. In March of '97 Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a similar fashion. After a brief respite from the business Combs launched his solo career as Puff Daddy with "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" which held down the top spot on the single charts for 2 months. He quickly followed up with a monster hit "I'll Be Missing You," in memory of his fallen friend. The LP No Way Out went multiple platinum. The 1999 release of Forever did not garner the attention of his previous efforts. His career was clouded by even more controversy when he was charged with the beating of Interscope Records exec Steve Stoute. The charge was reduced to second degree harrassment by the time it reached the courts. His relationship with Jennifer Lopez raised more eyebrows and culminated in a shooting at a New York City club in December. Combs was finally exonerated of all charges in connection with the club incident. He changed his now tarnished stage name to P. Diddy and released a gospel album Thank You as well as a new solo album The Saga Continues. "Bad Boy for Life" became his biggest hit. In 2002 Arista Records stopped distributing the Bad Boy label. He formed a new relationship with Universal. He created the Sean Jean line of clothing. |
