Nicolas Poussin Biography: Poussin was born into an impoverished family. This did not stop him from getting an early education in art. After he finished his assistantship he continued his studies independently paying particularly close attention to the classical paintings of Italy. The hard work paid off for before 1620 Poussin was considered a master and received a commission to decorate the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. In 1623 he migrated first to Venice and then on to Rome where he would stay for the rest of his life. By the 1630s his compositions became extremely complex with numerous figures interacting. In order to facilitate his work Poussin built a special box and created wax figures of his subjects.
Died: 1665
