Paul Desmond biography: He was best known for his cool smooth style of play on the alto sax. His peak years were those he spent with the Dave Brubeck Quartet during the late 50s and most of the 60s. The group's premier song "Take Five" was a Desmond composition in 5/4 and ranks as one of the most defiant time signatures in all music. He first teamed up with Brubeck as part of the Dave Brubeck Octet during the late 40s and early 50s. After 1967 he struck out on his own often playing with guitarist Jim Hall and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. Some of his recordings include Desmond Blue and Easy Living for RCA, Summertime for A&M/Horizon.
Died: May 30, 1977
