In 1965 he signed a recording contract with Bang Records while working in the Brill building writing music. In 1966 his recording of "Cherry, Cherry" reached the top ten while The Monkees "I'm a Believer" written by Neil Diamond became a chart topper. "Cherry, Cherry" would prove to be the first of a string of 5 straight top 20 hits which included "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon." In 1968 he moved to Uni Records where he recorded "Sweet Caroline," "Holly Holy," and "Cracklin' Rosie." With the release of the album Touching You, Touching Me he found the golden touch which he would maintain through much of his career. Neil Diamond had made it big and he signed a lucrative contract with Columbia Records in 1973. In 1976 his album Beautiful Noise produced by Robbie Robertson went platinum. In 1980 he starred in the remake of the Al Jolson film the Jazz Singer. Over the years he has developed into a dynamic live performer and in the '90s he became the performer who attracted the largest live audiences.
