Joan Miro Biography: He was born the son of a jeweler. His parents were not happy with his choice of careers and insisted that he also study business. When he finished school he worked as an accountant for nearly 2 years before he suffered a nervous breakdown. His parents relented and the young Miro dabbled in Cubism and Fauvism for a few years. In 1920 he visited Paris and returned there to live in 1921. Here he met Pablo Picasso and many of the other great painters living in Paris at that time. In 1924 he joined the circle of Surrealists under Andre Breton. He never fully adopted the Surrealist theory and by 1930 had developed his own style of painting which featured brilliant colors and simplified forms often integrating Catalan folk art into his paintings.
Died: December 25, 1983
