Marilyn Monroe Biography: Marilyn grew up fatherless. Her mother Gladys lost her job at a film lab and suffered a nervous breakdown. Young Norma Jeane spent her formative years in and out of 11 different foster homes. Her mother's friend Grace McKee beomes legal guardian for both Norma Jeane and her mother. At age 11 Norma lived with Grace and her husband Erwin Goddard. During this time she met and, on June 19, 1942, marries Jim Dougherty a next door neighbor. In 1943, Dougherty joined the Merchant Marines and Norma Jeane took a job at an aircraft factory. While working there she is photographed by an army photographer. After finding work as a model she quits her factory job in 1946 to pursue a full time modeling career, landing on the cover of 33 magazines. She then divorced her husband to become an actress. She secured a contract with 20th Century Fox where she spends several years playing small parts. After an acclaimed effort playing opposite Joseph Cotten in Niagra in 1952, she lands a leading role in How to Marry a Millionaire which earns her celebrity status. In 1952 she met and later married former Yankee star Joe DiMaggio who was 37 at the time. Marilyn was only 25. She later married playwright Arthur Miller. Both marriages ended in divorce.
