Rene Magritte Biography: Magritte was an average student who quit secondary school to enroll in art school. His earliest paintings were of the Sambre river where his
mother had killed herself in 1912. He acquired an interest in the Italian Futurist painters. His earliest successful paintings date from the early 1920s
and are Cubo-Futurist in style. He abandons all ideas of abstraction as it does not enable him to make reality manifest. Instead he chooses to paint in a
realistic manner but placing objects in situations that challenge the viewers concepts of reality.
Died: 1967
