Frans Hals Biography: Although he was not born there he spent the greater part of his life in Haarlem. He was a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens and like many other Dutch artists of the day he was a portrait painter, mostly a group portrait painter. Hals most famous works are his genre paintings done from 1620 to 1640. For these he used models drawn from the taverns and gamehouses of Haarlem. These paintings are alive with color and are more reminiscent of the Spanish school of painting than the Dutch.
Died: 1666
