Gerry Mulligan biography: The son of an engineer Gerry spent his youth moving from city to city wherever his father's career took them. He started on the piano before learning the clarinet and the various saxophones. When he was 16 his family settled in Philadelphia, PA. It is here that young Gerry began his professional music career. He called on bandleader Johnny Warrington who was director of WCAU-CBS radio to offer his services. What he got was constructive criticism and a customer for his musical arrangements. He first gained recognition as an arranger before moving on to become the most successful baritone sax player of all time. In 1946 he joined the Gene Krupa Orchestra as staff arranger and ocassional altoist. In the late 40s he was recorded on the baritone sax with Miles Davis. After traveling to Los Angeles he wrote some arrangements for Stan Kenton and also found work at the Haig. Realizing that he preferred playing solo without a piano he started jamming with trumpeter Chet Baker. The duo caught on and in 1952 they both became stars. In 1960 he formed his first Concert Jazz Band which performed at the Village Vanguard in New York. After that he went on a tour of North America and Europe and recorded 5 albums with the band. A relationship with actress Judy Holiday in the late 50s proved also to be a musical collaboration that produced 5 tunes which he recorded. Between 1968 and 72 Mulligan frequently toured with Dave Brubeck and appeared on the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's recording of Brubeck's oratorio, "The Light in the Wilderness." In the early 70s he recorded the album The Age of Steam and later Summit, the latter in Milan Italy where he met his wife Countess Franca Rota Borghini Baldovinetti. In 1977 he wrote the music for the French film La Menace. Gerry Mulligan continued to travel the world and perform until his death in 1996.
Died: January 20, 1996
