Born: 1862 City and Country of Origin: Salem, Massachusetts Painting School: American Impressionist Art Training: School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; l'Académie Julian, in Paris, with Boulanger and Lefebvre Exhibitions: Awards: Major Works: "Summer of 1909," "Sunlight," "Red and Gold," "Girl in a Red Shawl," Library of Congress murals Frank Weston Benson Biography: He was one of the most prolific painters of his period, who taught throughout his career. First he taught in Portland, Maine then later in his Boston studio. After 1890 Benson began to take his subjects outdoors as he became increasingly interested in the effects of light particularly on the color white. Often times you will find his subjects are young girls in bright white dresses set against a bright blue summer sky with strong blue shadows.
