The Eighties and New Wave | |
|
By the '80s the music industry had become more international. Disco was dead and a new phenomenon swept the industry, the studio owned and controlled groups
often playing more mainstream acceptable canned music. The '80s marked the rise of New Wave/Punk, a movement based upon three chord simple melodies which started back in
the '60s with groups like The New York Dolls, Velvet Underground and Iggy Pop, making inroads into the popular culture. This movement was taking part on both sides of the
Atlantic with the Ramones in New York and the Sex Pistols in London. It was also the decade of the mini English invasion with groups like Tears for Fears, Wham and Culture Club.
Meanwhile, inner city kids were experimenting with a new underground art form, rap. |
