After his mother died he returned to Indiana where he was raised by his aunt and uncle on their farm. After he finished high school he returned to California where he attended Santa Monica Junior College and UCLA. Heeding his mentor James Whitmore's advice he moved to New York where he worked as a busboy in the theater district while making several appearances on television. He landed a bit part in the Broadway show See the Jaguar and was accepted to study, free of charge, at the Actor's Studio. In 1954 he appeared on Broadway once again in The Immortalist. Upon winning the lead in Rebel Without A Cause he returned to Hollywood where he made 3 films in little over 1 year. Two of these parts earned him Oscar nominations. His all too short and tragic life came to an abrupt end on September 30, at the young age of 24, in a traffic accident while enroute to an auto race in Salinas. Died: September 30, 1955 Home |
