Born: December 6, 1920 Hometown: Concord, California Instrument: Pianist/Composer Music Training: College of the Pacific, Milhaud at Mills College Bands and Orchestras: Dave Brubeck Octet, Dave Brubeck Quartet Signature Song: "Take Five" Dave Brubeck biography: David Warren Brubeck, considered a genius in his field, was the son of a California cattle rancher/rodeo competitor father and pianist/piano teacher mother. His father groomed him to follow in his footsteps, but Dave went his own way entering the College of the Pacific in Stockton as a pre-med veterinarian student. However, his mother's influence led him to the Conservatory of Music. After he earned his degree he entered the armed services serving in General Patton's Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge during WW II. In 1946 he entered Mills College to study composition with famed French composer Darius Milhaud. It was here that he formed the Dave Brubeck Octet which led to the Dave Brubeck Trio and finally the famous Quartet. Although there were different members of the group at times, the most notable members of the group were Paul Desmond alto sax, Joe Morello on drums, Dave on the keyboard and Eugene Wright on bass. This group performedon college campuses, festivals and theaters worldwide. In 1967 the group disbanded so that Dave could devote more time to writing long composition.
