Jean Cocteau Biography: Jean Cocteau was born into a wealthy Parisian family. His father committed suicide when Jean was only 9 years old. In school he was a mediocre student unable to pass the graduation exams. At 19 he published his first volume of poetry Aladdin's Lamp. He would go on to have an illustrious career in poetry, fiction, filmmaking, painting, ballet and the opera. In 1915 he met Pablo Picasso.
