William Merritt Chase Biography: Chase was one of the finest artists ever born in the United States. He was an outstanding draftsman and a real painter's
painter. His work is marked by his fluid and spontaneous brushwork. He was equally at home painting large or miniature canvases, florals,
landscapes, still lifes or portraits. Even a setup of dead fish seemed to come to life with his deft rendering skills. In his life he achieved worldwide
recognition, but he always seemed to have to teach to be able to earn enough money. He was a member of the National Academy of Design,
National Institute of Arts and Letters, Society of American Artists and the Ten American Painters. He taught at the Art Students League, the
Brooklyn Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, and the New York School of Art.
Died: 1916
