Paul Cezanne Biography: He was the son of a wealthy banker and boyhood companion of the writer to be Emile Zola. He moved to Paris where he was attracted to the more radical side of the art world. His interest was aimed at artists like Delacroix, Courbet and Manet. He was not a great draftsman and was not satisfied with his early works, which were dark and more traditional in style, and destroys many canvases. He befriends Pissarro who introduces him to many of the Impressionist painters like Manet and Degas. Under Pissarro's tutelage he adopts a brighter more high keyed palette. He is best known for his landscapes and still lifes, but also did some figurative work. It is fortunate that he was wealthey as he did not sell many of his paintings until 1895 and in 1897 Ambroise Vollard bought every painting in his studio. It is his landscapes and figurative work that would be the main influence on the future Cubist painters like Braque, Gris and Picasso.
