Annibale Carracchi Biography: He was a member of a Bolognese family of painters. They as a family espoused the progressive natural style of painting as opposed to the idealized style of the Mannerists. They worked together as a family until 1595 when Annibale, easily the most gifted artist in the family, was called to Rome by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese to decorate the Farnese Gallery in the cardinal's family palace. Although you do not hear much about it today in the 17th and 18th centuries it was considered in the same breath as the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Carracchi fell out of grace in the 19th century art world along with others from the Bolognese school only to be recently rediscovered. Carrachi is also known for his drawings which by the way are known as caricatures.
Died: 1602
