Buddy Rich biography: Born to Vaudeville performers Robert and Bess Rich, the young drummer was introduced to the audience at a very young age. A child prodigy he was performing professionally as a solo drummer by the age of 4. In 1937 he began his music career performing with Joe Marsala at New York's Hickory House. By 1939 he had joined the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. Considered by many to be the greatest drummer of all time Rich was a little late arriving on the jazz scene. He appeared regularly in Jazz at the Philharmonic during the 40s. During the 50s he recorded with numerous Jazz greats including Charlie Parker, Lester Young and Art Tatum. He was slowed by a heart attack in 1959, but returned to continue his career. In 1983 he began to experience more heart problems which eventually contributed to his death in 1987.
Died: April 2, 1987
